Lieutenant Steve Cabrales is currently assigned as the Rural Operations Deputy Commander and Criminal Interdiction Commander for the Southern Command. Cabrales began his career with the Nevada Highway Patrol in September of 1980, when he was assigned to traffic working in Las Vegas. During his tenure with the Division, Cabrales has been assigned to traffic operations out of the Henderson Area, and the Accident Reconstruction Detail for that area. Cabrales was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in December of 1993, where he was assigned to Administrative Services. He was then transferred to Traffic Operations where he supervised the Fatal Detail.

In July of 2001, he was promoted to Lieutenant, and was assigned to Las Vegas Administrative Services. In 2002 he was assigned to Traffic Operations, and his current assignment. Cabrales was assigned as the State Public Service Training Officer Coordinator in 2003 and is responsible for overseeing the Public Safety Training Officer Program for training new Troopers in the field.

Lieutenant Cabrales has received specialized training in traffic accident reconstruction from Northwestern Traffic Institute, Critical Incident Management, Criminal Interdiction, and Weapons of Mass Destruction.
