Lieutenant John Stewart began his career with the Highway Patrol in 1985. Upon completion of Academy XXI, Lt. Stewart was assigned to the Tonopah District in rural Nevada . Lt. Stewart transferred to Reno in 1988. During his tour in Reno , Stewart became a Field Training Officer and a Drug Recognition Expert. Stewart was reassigned to the Commercial Enforcement Bureau in 1993. During his tour in Commercial Enforcement, Lt. Stewart was tasked with a multitude of duties and assignments. Lt. Stewart was actively involved in training and outreach programs for the commercial carrier industry, and taught the North American Standards course for the U.S Department of Transportation. Lt. Stewart earned his Hazardous Materials Technician certification through the University of Nevada , Reno , Dodd/Beals Fire Academy in 1994. In addition, Lt. Stewart was a consultant for the Nevada State Truck Driving Council and a compliance review technician, conducting on-site carrier inspections.

In 1996, Lt. Stewart was transferred to Headquarters to assume the duties of the statewide Federal Projects Coordinator. Lt. Stewart was responsible for the acquisition, coordination and administration of Federal grants and projects. Lt. Stewart served on the board of Directors for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, an association of state, provincial, and federal officials responsible for the administration and enforcement of motor carrier safety laws in the United States , Canada and Mexico . Lt. Stewart also served as a committee member on the National Peer Exchange program, administered through North Dakota State University . As a Peer exchange member, Lt. Stewart traveled to numerous states to evaluate their educational and technical assistance programs provided to the Commercial Industry.

In 1998, Lt. Stewart was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and reassigned to the Reno office. During his tenure as a Sergeant, Lt. Stewart served as a shift Commander on all three work shifts, and as an administrative Sergeant. Lt. Stewart was promoted to his current rank in 2004 and is currently the Urban Traffic Operations Commander.

Prior to joining the Highway Patrol, Lt. Stewart served 4 years in the United States Air Force as a Law Enforcement Specialist. Lt. Stewart was assigned to the Criminal Investigations unit prior to being honorably discharged. Lt. Stewart attended the Community College of the Air Force and Yuba College Ca., earning a California Reserve P.O.S.T. certificate.
