Chief Tony Almaraz
Nevada Highway Patrol

Tony Almaraz has been with the Department of Public Safety / Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) Division for over 20 years. After graduation from the NHP Academy in 1988, he started his career as a Trooper in Elko Nevada assigned to traffic. In 1990, Almaraz transferred to the Reno office. In addition to his assignment in Reno, Almaraz became a field training officer, aircraft observer and DUI instructor at the academy and was a staff member at the Nevada Judicial College for five years, where he instructed judicial education on NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. From 1993 to 1994 and 1997 to 1999, Almaraz served as the Northern Command Public Information Officer.

In 1999, Almaraz was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the Lovelock duty station. In 2000, Almaraz was re-assigned to the Reno office as the administrative sergeant that supervised the communication center and all administrative office functions. In 2001, Almaraz was assigned as the sergeant for the Reno urban area.

In 2003, Almaraz was assigned to NHP Headquarters as the Human Resources Commander and promoted to Lieutenant and assumed the duties of Human Resources Commander and Executive Officer to the Chief.

In 2005, Almaraz was promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned to the Department of Public Safety / Parole & Probation. During his tenure in Parole & Probation, Almaraz was assigned as the Acting Major over the Parole & Probation Northern Command. In December of 2006, Almaraz was promoted to Major and re-assigned back to the Highway Patrol Division as the Deputy Chief for the Northern Command and responsible for Reno, Carson City/Minden/Lake Tahoe, Fernley, Fallon, Lovelock, Yerington, Hawthorne and Tonopah.

In November 2008, Almaraz was assigned to Department of Public Safety / Nevada Highway Patrol Headquarters, where he was responsible for personnel, budgets and managed issues with the Legislative Counsel Bureau.

On August 10, 2009 Almaraz was appointed to Chief of Nevada Highway Patrol.

Prior to joining the Nevada Highway Patrol, Chief Almaraz served four years in the US Air Force in law enforcement. Chief Almaraz has attended the University of Nevada-Reno, Black Hills State College and is a graduate of Northwestern University Police Command School.
